The short answer
- 1With Premium, a bar above a foreign-language chat translates the whole conversation as you scroll.
- 2Turn on Translate Entire Chats and add the languages you read to Do Not Translate.
- 3Check numbers and dates in the original, and never translate secret chats.

The whole chat, not one message at a time
Every account can translate a single message by long-pressing it; see how to translate messages. With Telegram Premium, a translation bar appears at the top of a chat written in another language. Tap it once and the whole conversation is translated, both the messages already there and the new ones, as you scroll. If you read a foreign-language channel every day, or sit in a group with members from several countries, that saves a long-press on every post.
- Real-Time Translation - the feature as Telegram describes it in Settings › Telegram Premium
Opened from Settings › Telegram Premium by tapping the feature. This is Telegram's preview page; the setting itself lives where the steps below say.
Translation keeps the shape of a message: links, bold text, quotes and attachments stay where they were. The bar's menu lets you pick a different target language or go back to the original at any time. The other people in the chat are not told that you are reading it translated.
Turning it on
- Main menu (☰)
- Settings
- Language
- Settings tab
- Language
- Bottom Settings tab
- Language
- Open the Language settings above.
- Turn on Show Translate Button and Translate Entire Chats.
- Under Do Not Translate, add every language you already read, so the bar stays away from those chats.
- Open a chat in another language and tap the bar at the top.
Using it well
| Situation | What works best |
|---|---|
| A foreign-language channel you read every day | Whole-chat translation; leave it on for that channel |
| One foreign line in a chat you otherwise read | Translate just that message; no bar needed |
| You speak two languages | Put both under Do Not Translate, so the bar only appears for a third |
| Text inside a photo | The bar translates messages and captions, not pictures; copy the text first, see copying text from images |
Where machine translation goes wrong
Machine translation reads smoothly even when it is wrong, and it is most often wrong about numbers, dates, prices and negatives. A missing "not" turns an instruction into its opposite and still sounds natural. When a translated message asks you to pay, sign, meet or decide something, open the original for the important line, and for agreements repeat the key point back in your own words. More examples are in where Telegram translation goes wrong.
If someone seems unexpectedly rude in translation, check the original before reacting. Politeness and tone are the first things a translation loses.
FAQ
Can free Telegram users translate messages?
Yes, one message at a time with a long-press. Translating a whole chat as you scroll needs Telegram Premium.
Does the other person know I am translating?
No. Translation happens on your side and the other people in the chat are not notified.
Why does the translation bar not appear?
Check that Translate Entire Chats is on and that the chat's language is not in your Do Not Translate list.
