Telegram Premium: Checklists

Telegram Premium subscribers can send checklists that anyone in the chat can tick. Where a checklist fits, where it does not, and how to make and finish one.

The short answer

  1. 1A checklist is a live message with boxes; creating one needs Premium, ticking does not.
  2. 2Two permissions, marking as done and adding tasks, decide what kind of list it is.
  3. 3Pin it while it is live, and say it is finished and unpin it when done.

A to-do list that lives in the chat

A checklist is a message with boxes in it. You write the items, decide whether others may tick them or add items, and send it; it stays live in the chat. Ticks appear as people complete things, each with a name attached. Creating one is a Telegram Premium feature. The people receiving it need nothing: it looks like an ordinary interactive message and they tick their part, so it works in groups where most members do not subscribe.

Opened from Settings › Telegram Premium by tapping the feature. This is Telegram's preview page; the setting itself lives where the steps below say.

The two permissions, Allow Others to Mark as Done and Allow Others to Add Tasks, decide what kind of list you have made; that choice is covered in detail in making a checklist.

Where a checklist fits

WhereHow it behaves
A few people sharing one job: an event, a launch, a moveWhat it was made for. Everyone sees the same state without asking, which replaces the worst group pattern: people each saying they did their part and nobody knowing what is left
A large groupWorks for a short list with a clear end. Pin it while it is live, or it is pushed out of sight within a day; see pinning messages
Saved Messages, for yourselfA simple personal list. With no one else ticking, the names add nothing; a reminder may suit you better
Long-running work with dates and ownersNot its strength. A checklist has no due dates or assignments, and a list still mostly unticked months later teaches everyone to ignore the next one

Making and finishing a checklist

  1. Open the attachment (paperclip) menu in the message field and choose Checklist. It appears only on Premium accounts.
  2. Write a title and the items. Short items are easier to tick.
  3. Set the two permissions before sending: marking as done, and adding tasks.
  4. Send it and pin it while the work is live.
  5. When it is done, say so and unpin it. A finished list left pinned hides the next real one.
