Pinning a second message in Telegram does not replace the first. They stack, the bar at the top of the chat cycles through them, and a list view shows all of them at once.
There is also a checkbox that sends a notification to everyone in the group — including people who muted it. That one deserves more thought than the pinning itself.
What you will be able to do
- check_circle Keep several announcements pinned at once instead of overwriting yesterday's.
- check_circle Move between pins from the bar at the top, and open the full list.
- check_circle Decide when a pin should notify muted members, and when that is an abuse of their attention.
- check_circle Let trusted members pin without making them full admins.
The thin vertical marks on the left of the pin bar are the stack — one segment per pinned message, showing where you are in it.
push_pin A stack, and a bar that cycles it
In a group that moves quickly, one pin is not enough. The rules, the current announcement and the link everyone keeps asking for are three different things, and rotating them through a single slot means two of them are always missing.
Telegram keeps them all. The newest sits at the top of the bar; tapping the bar jumps to the next one and scrolls the chat to it. The list icon on the right opens every pin at once, which is the view to send someone when they ask where something is.
Should this pin notify everyone?
The "Notify all members" checkbox rings phones that have muted the group. Four situations, and the honest answer for each.
cancel Rules, FAQ, permanent links — do not notify
warning A scheduled event — once, not twice
check_circle A security warning — yes
cancel Good news, launches, milestones — no
A workable rule: notify only when not knowing costs the member something.
checklist Pinning, cycling, unpinning
- Pin a message Press and hold it on mobile, or right-click on desktop, and choose Pin.
- Choose whether it notifies The confirmation offers Notify all members. Leaving it unticked pins silently — the message still appears in the bar for everyone.
- Move through the stack Tap the bar at the top to jump to the next pin. The chat scrolls to it and highlights it briefly.
- Open the full list The list icon at the right of the bar shows every pin in one screen, where you can unpin individually.
lock Who is allowed to pin
By default only admins with the Pin Messages permission can pin. That permission is separate from the others, so a moderator can be allowed to pin without being able to ban, delete or change group settings.
You can also grant pinning to everyone, in Group Settings under Permissions. That is workable in a small trusted group and unmanageable in a large public one — the pin bar is shared, so anyone who can pin can push a security notice out of view.
This page is the mechanics. The curriculum step covers pinned messages as a structure: ordering a stack deliberately, using it as a roadmap, and how admin permissions interact with it.
