Telegram Activity Navigation Architecture: Unread @Mentions Badges, Reaction Counters & Priority Chat Anchoring
In a group that moves quickly, the thing you need is rarely the newest message. It is the one that was addressed to you, four hundred messages ago.
Telegram puts a small floating badge above the scroll-to-bottom button for exactly that. Tap it and you land on the oldest unread mention, not at the end of the conversation.
What you will be able to do
- check_circle Jump straight to the messages that mention you.
- check_circle See who reacted to something you posted.
- check_circle Stay in a loud group without reading all of it.
- check_circle Set notifications so that being mentioned still reaches you.
The badge sits above the arrow in the corner and carries a count. It is only there when something is waiting.
alternate_email Two separate queues
Telegram keeps the messages aimed at you apart from the messages merely near you. Unread counts tell you a group has been busy; the mention badge tells you that somebody wanted your attention. They are different facts and the app treats them as such.
A mention is created three ways: somebody types your public username, somebody picks your name from the member list, or somebody replies directly to a message of yours. The third is the one people forget, and it is the most common in practice — a reply is a mention whether or not anybody typed an at-sign.
Reactions get their own badge in the same corner. It answers a question the unread count cannot: not how much happened, but what happened to your things.

Three are strategies. The fourth is what most people do, and it is why they leave.

The badge changes the question from what did I miss to what was asked of me. Only the second one has an answer.

- Look for the badge above the down arrow Bottom corner of the chat, with a count on it.
- Tap it to reach the oldest mention And again for each one after that.
- Mute the group from its header The unread count stays; the noise stops.
- Open the chat's notification exceptions And allow mentions and replies through the mute.
- Give yourself a username So people have an easy way to call you.
- Archive what you do not need in the list Mentions still find you there.
