The short answer
- 1Security software can remove the installer, stop the app or block its connection.
- 2On your own computer: confirm the file is official, restore it, add an exception.
- 3On work computers, ask IT; and trust warnings about files received in chats.

How a block shows up
Security software can stop Telegram in different ways, and each looks like a different fault:
| What you see | Likely block |
|---|---|
| The installer disappears after download, or a "threat removed" notice | The antivirus quarantined the file |
| Telegram Desktop opens and closes, or will not start | The antivirus blocks the program from running |
| The app opens but stays on "Connecting…" | A firewall or network filter blocks Telegram's connection |
| Downloaded files vanish or cannot be opened | The antivirus scans and removes files from the download folder |
Your own computer: check, then allow
- Make sure the file is genuine. Download Telegram only from desktop.telegram.org or your app store. A file from elsewhere being blocked may be blocked for good reason.
- Look at the antivirus history. Most programs keep a list of quarantined or blocked items. If the official Telegram installer or program is there, restore it.
- Add an exception for Telegram in the antivirus or firewall, rather than switching protection off altogether.
- Reinstall the official version afterwards if files were removed. Your chats are in the cloud and come back when you log in.
A work or school computer
On computers managed by an employer or school, security software is often set centrally. You may not be able to change it, and trying to get around it can break the rules you agreed to. If you need Telegram for work, ask the IT team; they can allow it properly. Until then, Telegram on your own phone is the simple alternative. Network-level blocks are covered in Telegram on a school or office network.
Not the antivirus after all?
- If Telegram Desktop will not start even with nothing blocked, see Telegram Desktop won't start.
- If it stays on "Connecting…" on every network, see stuck on Connecting.
Next step: reinstalled and your chats or files are gone.
FAQ
Why does my antivirus delete the Telegram installer?
It may have flagged the file. If it is the official installer from desktop.telegram.org, restore it and add an exception.
Can a firewall stop Telegram connecting?
Yes. Telegram then stays on Connecting. Allow Telegram in the firewall or try another network.
Should I disable antivirus to use Telegram?
No. Add an exception for the official Telegram instead.
