The short answer
- 1AI can imitate a voice and a face, so one video call does not prove who is calling.
- 2Urgency, secrecy and a request for money or a code together mean stop.
- 3Call back on a number you already have, ask what only they would know, or use a check word.

Seeing a face is no longer proof
AI tools can now imitate a voice from a short recording and put a familiar face on a video. Scammers use this to send a brief video call, a video message or a voice message that looks and sounds like a family member, a friend or a boss, followed by an urgent request for money or a login code. One convincing call does not confirm who is on the other end.
Three signals that mean stop
| Signal | What it sounds like |
|---|---|
| Urgency | "Right now", "in the next ten minutes", "before the bank closes" |
| Secrecy | "Don't tell Mum", "keep this between us", "don't involve the office" |
| Money or a code | A transfer, gift cards, crypto, or "read me the code you just got" |
When the three come together, stop, however real the face looks. A call that keeps cutting out, or a switch to voice only "because the video is bad", is a common cover for a fake.
Checks that actually work
- Hang up and call back on a number you already have. Use the number saved in your phone from before, not a new one given in the message.
- Ask something only the real person knows and that is not on social media: what you ate together last holiday, a childhood nickname.
- Agree a check word in advance with family or your team, and ask for it whenever there is an urgent request for money.
Related impersonation tricks
- A real friend's account, taken over: the messages come from the genuine profile, so the profile proves nothing either. Check through another channel; see if an account was hacked.
- Weeks of friendly chat first: see romance scams.
- Your login code: nobody, including family, ever needs it; see the login code nobody should ask for.
If you already sent money
- Send nothing more.
- Keep evidence: the messages, call records, usernames and payment records.
- Report the account in Telegram (⋮ › Report); see how to report.
- Call your bank at once to stop the payment, and report to your local police. Tell the person who was impersonated, so others are warned.
FAQ
Can a Telegram video call be faked?
Yes. AI tools can imitate faces and voices, so a short call is not proof of identity.
How do I check if a call from a relative is real?
Hang up and call them on the number you already have saved, or ask a question only they could answer.
Do the encryption emoji in a Telegram call prove who I'm talking to?
No. They confirm the connection is encrypted, not whose face or voice is on it.
