The short answer
- 1'This phone number is banned' means the number itself is blocked; waiting will not lift it.
- 2The appeal route is the Help button next to the message.
- 3Paid unban services are scams; Telegram's support is free.

What the message means
You type your number, tap Next, and instead of a code screen you see This phone number is banned. The wording is the same on Android, iPhone, Telegram Desktop and Telegram for macOS, usually with a Help button beside it.
This is not a format problem and not a pause. The number itself is blocked from logging in to or signing up for Telegram. Waiting will not lift it, and asking for codes again will not change the answer.
| The message says | What it is | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| "This phone number is banned." | The number is blocked | Appeal, as below |
| "Too many attempts, please try again later." | A temporary pause | Wait; see 'Too many attempts' |
| "Invalid phone number" | The way the number was typed | Fix the format; see 'Invalid phone number' |
| "Your account is frozen" | You are logged in, but the account is read-only | Appeal in the app; see a frozen account |
Why a number gets banned
Telegram blocks numbers to keep out spam and scam accounts. Your own behaviour is only one of the possible reasons:
- A recycled number. Carriers reassign numbers that someone else gave up. If the previous owner used it for spam, the ban came with the number. Recycled numbers covers this case.
- A shared or online number. Numbers from apps and websites that many people use to receive verification codes are often blocked as a group. See virtual and foreign numbers.
- Your account broke the Terms of Service. Bulk messages to strangers, advertising, scams or many reports from other users can end in a ban.
How to appeal: the Help button
The appeal route is built into the message. On a phone, tapping Help opens your email app with a message to Telegram already addressed, the subject "Banned phone number:" followed by your number, and a body that says you are trying to use your number but Telegram says it is banned, along with your app and system versions.
- Tap Help next to the message.
- Keep the prefilled subject and details. They are what lets support find the number.
- Add a few short, factual lines in English: how long you have had the number, whether you were signing up or logging in to an existing account, and that you have not sent spam.
- Send it once, then wait. Replies can be slow or may not come at all. Sending the same email again does not move it up the queue.
If there is no answer
- The number is new to you: asking your carrier for a different number is often the quickest fix, because the ban belongs to the number's history, not to you.
- You had an account on it: check whether Telegram is still logged in on another phone, a tablet or a computer. If it is, open it and look at what the account itself says, and follow any appeal shown there.
- Your chats matter to you: while a device is still logged in, use Telegram Desktop's export to save the chats you need. See what logging out removes and keeps before you log out anywhere.
Next step: sign-up blocked with a virtual or foreign number.
FAQ
How long does a Telegram phone number ban last?
It does not expire by waiting. The way to challenge it is the appeal sent with the Help button next to the message.
Why is my new phone number banned on Telegram?
Carriers recycle numbers. If the previous owner used the number for spam, the ban can come with it.
Can someone unban my Telegram number for a fee?
No. Telegram's appeal routes are free. Paid unban offers are scams, and some try to take over the account.
