The short answer

  1. 1A video sent as a file arrives as a file icon and may not play in Telegram.
  2. 2A video that stops usually has not finished downloading.
  3. 3If it plays nowhere, ask the sender to send it again as a normal video.

Was it sent as a video or as a file?

Telegram plays videos in its own player when they were sent as a video. A video sent as a file (a document) arrives as a file icon with a name like clip.mkv or recording.avi, and Telegram may not play it itself. That is the most common reason a "video" will not play.

A video that starts and stops, or shows black

  1. Let it download completely. A half-downloaded video stops where the download stopped. Wait until the progress under the player is full. See slow downloads and pausing videos.
  2. Free up space. With the phone almost full, the download can fail partway. Clearing Telegram's cache is safe; see media won't download.
  3. Update Telegram. Newer video formats and qualities need a recent app; see the app won't update.
  4. Try another device. If the video plays on your computer but not your phone, the phone may not support its format. If it plays nowhere, the file itself may be damaged; ask the sender to send it again.

Sound but no picture, or picture but no sound

  • No sound: videos in chats often start muted. Tap the speaker icon in the player, and check the phone's media volume rather than the ringer volume.
  • No picture: the video may use a format your phone cannot decode. Asking the sender to send it as a normal video, not as a file, usually lets Telegram prepare it for playback.

Next step: a received file won't open (APK, documents, archives).
