Privacy on the internet comes down to two separate promises, and they are often confused with one another. One is that your conversations stay between the people in them. The other is that your data is not turned into a product. A service can keep one and break the other.

Protecting the conversation

This is a technical question with a technical answer: encryption, and who holds the keys. Telegram's Secret Chats are end to end, so the keys live on the two devices and nothing readable exists anywhere else. Cloud chats trade some of that for the ability to appear on a new phone, and the design compensates by keeping keys and data in different places under different jurisdictions.

Not monetising the person

This is a business question, and it is the one users can least verify for themselves, which is why it matters what a service commits to. Telegram does not sell user data and does not use personal data to target advertising. The advertising that exists is matched to the public channel being read, not to a profile of the reader, and a Premium subscription removes it.

Why both halves are necessary

A messenger can encrypt every message perfectly and still build a detailed picture of you from who you talk to, when, how often, and what you tap. Equally, a service can promise never to sell anything while storing your conversations in a form anyone with access can read. Judging a service means asking both questions, and accepting an answer to one as an answer to the other is the most common mistake.

What you can check rather than trust

  • The client applications are published as source code.
  • Builds are reproducible, so the app you installed can be matched against that source.
  • The protocol is documented publicly and has been examined by outside researchers.
  • Each Secret Chat exposes a key visualisation that both participants can compare.
Read the privacy policy of anything you rely on, including this one. A policy written to be understood rather than to be scrolled past is itself a signal.
