What can I use as my username?
A username may contain letters a to z, digits 0 to 9, and underscores. It must be five to thirty-two characters long and must begin with a letter. Usernames are case-insensitive, so Telegram and TeleGram are the same account, though the capitalisation you type is kept and displayed.

What a username gives you
It creates a public address, t.me/yourname, that anyone can open without knowing your phone number. That link works in a browser, in a message, on a business card or in an email signature, and it is the safest way to let strangers contact you, because your number stays private.
Choosing one you will keep
- Short and sayable. If you have to spell it out loud, it is too clever.
- Match your other handles. The same name across platforms is the simplest proof that an account is really yours.
- Be careful with underscores. They are invisible when spoken and are a favourite tool of impersonators.
- Avoid a year or a version. You will still be using this in five years.
If the name you want is taken, short and memorable usernames are also traded on Fragment, Telegram's official marketplace, where they are held as blockchain-based assets. Buying one there transfers it to you properly rather than informally.
