No, and no messenger can promise otherwise. Telegram makes every effort to alert you when a screenshot is taken in a Secret Chat, but on some platforms detection can be bypassed, and no software can stop somebody photographing the screen with a second device.
What the alert can and cannot do
| Usually detected | Cannot be detected |
|---|---|
| The system screenshot function in a Secret Chat | A photograph of the screen taken with another camera |
| Screen capture on certain Android and Windows devices | |
| Anyone simply reading over a shoulder |
The honest framing
Screenshot notification is a courtesy signal, not a control. It tells you that a particular action happened on a cooperating system. It does not prevent the action, and it cannot see the most low-technology copy there is, which is another phone pointed at the screen. Any feature described as preventing screenshots is making a claim it cannot keep.
What actually reduces the risk
- Choose the recipient carefully. This is the only real control, and everything else is secondary to it.
- Use self-destruct timers. They limit how long a copy is available to make, even if they cannot prevent one.
- Remember forwarding is restricted in Secret Chats, which raises the effort required to pass something on.
- Assume anything you send can be kept. Decide what to send on that basis rather than on what the interface promises.
