In a private Telegram chat you can delete any message for both sides, with no time limit, whether you sent it or received it. Nothing is left in its place — no greyed-out note saying something was removed.
That is unusually generous, and it is worth being precise about what it achieves. Deleting a message removes the copy. It does not remove the fact that somebody read it.

delete Two checkboxes, one decision
Every delete in a private chat asks the same question. Leave the box unticked and the message vanishes from your device only; the other person still has it. Tick it and it disappears from both sides, at once, wherever either of you is signed in.
Two things make Telegram's version unusual. There is no countdown — a message from years ago deletes exactly as readily as one from a minute ago. And it is symmetrical: you can delete messages the other person sent you, not only your own. That second one surprises people, and it is deliberate. A conversation belongs to both of you, so either of you can end its existence.
Nor does it leave a mark. Other messengers put a placeholder where the message was, which announces that something was deleted and invites the exact question you were avoiding. Telegram closes the gap and the bubbles move together.

Deletion is excellent at removing the copy and powerless over everything already in somebody's head.

- Hold a message, then delete Read the checkbox before confirming; it is the only thing that decides whether the other side keeps it.
- Select several at once Hold one, tap the rest, delete them together.
- Clear history from the chat's menu To empty a conversation without removing it from your list.
- Clear calls from the Calls tab With its own option to clear them for the other person too.
- Set auto-delete for chats that should not accumulate A timer applied once beats remembering to tidy up.
