The short answer
- 1A black screenshot means the app blocked capture for that screen.
- 2Every screen black on Android: turn Show Content on in Passcode Lock.
- 3One chat or item only: someone else's protection, which you cannot lift.

Who blocked the screenshot?
When a screenshot of Telegram comes out black, or your phone says it cannot capture the screen because of a security policy (the wording depends on the phone), the app has blocked capture for that screen. It is not a fault. What matters is who switched the block on, because only one case is yours to change:
- Every Telegram screen is black → a setting in your own app, on Android. See section 2.
- Only one chat, channel, photo or story → a protection someone else chose. You cannot lift it. See section 3.
Everything is black: Android's "Show Content" switch
When you turn on Telegram's passcode lock on Android, a section called App Content in Task Switcher appears in the passcode settings, with a Show Content switch. The app explains: "If disabled, chat content will be hidden in the task switcher but you won't be able to take screenshots in the app."

- Show Content
Not available on this device.
- Open Passcode Lock and enter your passcode.
- Under App Content in Task Switcher, switch Show Content on.
- The app warns that "You may need to restart the app for this to take effect." If screenshots are still black, close Telegram fully and open it again.
The switch only exists while the passcode lock is on. If you never set a passcode and every screen is still black, look at the phone instead: a company security app or device management policy can block screenshots for all apps.
One chat or item is blocked: someone else's protection
| Where | Who decided | What it blocks |
|---|---|---|
| Secret chats | The two people in it | Screenshots on some devices; Telegram tries to tell the other person if you take one |
| Photos or videos that disappear after viewing | The sender | Saving and screenshots |
| A group or channel with Restrict saving content | Its admins | Forwarding, saving and screenshots; see can't save or forward |
| A one-to-one chat with Disable Sharing | The other person | "Disable screenshots and screen recordings in this chat." |
| A story without screenshots allowed | Whoever posted it | Downloading and screenshots of that story |
In each case, Telegram respects the other person's choice. This guide does not explain ways around it. If you genuinely need to keep something, ask the sender or the admins to lift the protection.
Blocked screenshots are not a guarantee
Telegram's FAQ is frank about the limits: on some systems there is no reliable way to detect screenshots, and nothing can stop someone photographing the screen with another device or camera. If you are the one turning protection on, treat it as a deterrent, not a lock, and only send sensitive material to people you trust.

FAQ
Why are my Telegram screenshots black?
On Android, if every screen is black, Show Content is off in the passcode settings. If only one chat is, someone protected it.
How do I allow screenshots in Telegram?
Settings > Privacy & Security > Passcode Lock > Show Content on, then restart the app. Other people's protections cannot be lifted by you.
Does Telegram tell people when I take a screenshot?
In secret chats it tries to, on some devices. The FAQ says there is no reliable way to detect screenshots on every system.
