The appearance settings hold more than a dark mode switch. There is an accent colour, a message text size, the corner shape of bubbles, a night mode schedule, and the ability to install a theme somebody else made.
One of those is worth more than the rest put together: the text size. It is the setting that decides whether you can comfortably read the app, and almost nobody touches it.
What you will be able to do

Everything on this screen previews live behind real messages, which is the only honest way to judge it.
format_size Start with the text
The message text size slider changes how much of a conversation fits on screen and how hard your eyes work to read it. Larger is not only for people who need it — on a phone held at arm's length in bad light it is better for almost everybody, and the cost is a line or two of visible history.
The accent colour and the bubble shape are taste, and the preview behind real messages is the right way to choose them. The one thing to check is contrast: a pale accent on a light theme makes every link and every button harder to see, and you will not notice until you are outdoors.
Night mode is the setting worth automating. Tie it to your system, or to sunset, and it stops being something you do and starts being something that happens.
