Setting a new profile picture on Telegram does not delete the old one. Every avatar you have used is kept in order, and you can swipe back through them and promote any of them to the front again.
That single behaviour changes what a profile picture is for. It is a stack you curate rather than a slot you overwrite — and the clip below is the gesture that gets you into it.
What you will be able to do

The counter at the top of the viewer is the position in your stack — that is how you know there is history to swipe through.
history A stack, not a slot
In most messengers a profile photo is one field. Upload a new one and the previous image is gone; getting it back means finding the original file again, if you still have it.
Telegram keeps them as an ordered list on your account. The newest is what people see, the rest sit behind it, and promoting an old one moves it to the front rather than re-uploading it. Because the list lives on the account and not the handset, it is there when you sign in on a new phone.
Who sees which picture
Profile photo visibility is a separate setting from the stack itself, and it has a feature most people never find: a fallback picture shown to everyone you excluded.

The combination most people actually want: photo for contacts, fallback image for everyone else.
swipe Bringing an old avatar back
- Open your own profile photo Settings, then tap the round photo at the top. This opens the full-screen viewer, not the editor.
- Swipe sideways Each swipe moves one step back through the stack. The counter at the top tells you where you are.
- Promote the one you want Tap the three-dot menu in the corner and choose Set as Main. It moves to the front immediately.
- Check what everyone else sees The change propagates to chats, groups and channels at once. If you use a public fallback, that one is unaffected — it is a separate slot.
