Telegram lets you put any photo behind your chats, and then gives you two switches that decide whether that was a good idea: a blur, and a tilt effect driven by the phone's motion sensors.
The blur is the one that matters. A photo with detail in it competes with the text on top of it, and blurring is what turns a picture you like into a background you can read against.
What you will be able to do
- check_circle Set a photo from your gallery as the chat background, on the right screen for your platform.
- check_circle Judge whether a given photo needs the blur, before you commit to it.
- check_circle Give a single conversation its own wallpaper, without changing the rest.
- check_circle Share a wallpaper you configured so someone else gets the identical look.
The Blurred and Motion buttons appear on the preview, before you confirm — not afterwards in a settings screen.
contrast Readability is the whole problem
A chat background sits directly behind text. Anything with sharp edges, high contrast or small repeating detail fights with the message bubbles, and the effect is worse on the parts of the screen where a bubble is partly transparent.
This is why the preset patterns Telegram ships are all low-contrast: they are designed to lose. A holiday photo is not, which is what the blur is for — it removes the fine detail while keeping the colour and the shape you liked.
Which photo will work
Not every picture makes a usable background. These are the four cases, and what to do about each.
check_circle Soft gradients, sky, fog, out-of-focus shots
warning Cityscapes, foliage, patterned fabric
warning Photos of people
warning Near-black or near-white images
The short version: if you can read small text on the thumbnail, it will work. If not, blur it.
wallpaper Setting one
- Open the wallpaper screen On Android it is the side menu, then Settings, Chat Settings, Change Chat Wallpaper. On iOS it is Settings, Appearance, Chat Wallpaper.
- Pick a photo, or a preset Choose from Gallery opens your camera roll. The built-in patterns are further down the same screen if you decide a photo is not worth the trouble.
- Decide on blur and motion Both are buttons on the preview, before you confirm. Blur softens the detail; Motion shifts the image slightly as you tilt the phone.
- Apply it Set Wallpaper applies it everywhere. To change one conversation only, open that chat's header instead, then the three-dot menu, then Change Wallpaper.
battery_alert About the motion effect
Motion reads the phone's orientation sensors and shifts the background a few pixels as you tilt. It is a small effect by design — large parallax behind text would be unusable.
Sensor polling of this kind is cheap, but it is not free, and it is one of the things power saving mode switches off. If you have battery saver on and wonder why the background stopped moving, that is why rather than a bug.
This page is choosing and applying one. The curriculum step covers the wider appearance system: per-chat themes, how wallpapers interact with dark mode, and the built-in pattern set.
