The short answer
- 1The start page fills the empty chat before the first message and vanishes once anyone writes.
- 2Write what you do and what to include in the first message, not a slogan.
- 3Do not repeat the greeting message; the two are read at different moments.

The moment before typing
The start page fills the empty space someone sees before they message you: a title, a couple of lines and a sticker. It stays until the first message is sent. That makes it the one text on your account a new customer is guaranteed to see. Setting one up is covered in setting up a start page.
A person who has just opened a chat with a business is hesitating. While they write their first message they are judging whether this is the right place to ask, and the screen in front of them is usually blank. A greeting arrives only after they write, and a bio is one line they may never open. The start page is what they look at while deciding what to say.
What to put on a start page
| Write | Skip |
|---|---|
| What you do and who it is for, in plain words | Slogans and welcome phrases |
| What to include in the first message: a date, an order number, a photo | A long list of rules |
| A sticker that fits your business, if you want warmth | Anything that repeats your greeting message; they are read at different moments |
Two sentences are enough to turn a vague first message into a useful one, so the conversation starts a step ahead. To bring people to this screen with a message already typed, see links to chat.
