Search finds usernames, not names
Telegram's search looks for people you do not know by their @username. Their display name, the name shown above their messages, can be anything and is shared by many people, so typing "Alex Carter" will rarely find a stranger. Typing their exact username will.
Type the username into the search box above your chat list. People and public chats you have not talked to appear under Global search, below your own chats.
- Narrow the results by type
- Global search: public chats you have not joined
- The @username, and how many people are in it
You can't find someone
| Check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| You typed their username, not their name | Names are matched mostly within your own contacts and chats |
| The spelling is exact, including underscores and digits | Capital letters do not matter, but every character does |
| You scrolled down to Global search | Strangers appear below your own chats, not at the top |
| They still use that username | Usernames can be changed or removed. An old one no longer finds them, and may now belong to someone else |
| They have a username at all | Telegram's FAQ says only people who set a username can be found by it |
Finding someone by phone number only works if that person allows it: their privacy settings decide who can find them by their number.
People can't find you
If others search for you and get nothing, you probably have no username. Set one under your profile or account settings. The rules are the same everywhere:
- Letters a–z, digits 0–9 and underscores.
- At least 5 characters.
- It cannot start with a number: "Usernames can't start with a number."
- It must be free. If someone else has it, choose another.
The app explains the trade-off: with a username, "people will be able to find you by this username and contact you without needing your phone number." If you do not want strangers to find you, leave it empty. To control who can message you once you are findable, see who can see your phone number.
Lookalike usernames in search results
Because usernames must be unique, impersonators use near copies: an extra letter, an underscore, an "official" or "support" suffix. When you find a well-known person or business through search, compare the username with the one on their website or other accounts before messaging. Searching for public groups and channels works the same way; see searching for public groups and channels.
Next step: a friend isn't in your contacts, or shows as a number.
