The short answer

  1. 1Telegram reads your phone's contacts; missing friends mean that reading failed.
  2. 2Check the contacts permission and Sync Contacts in Privacy and Security.
  3. 3Names shown as numbers: rename the contact and change it back, as Telegram's FAQ advises.

How friends get into your Telegram contacts

Telegram reads your phone's contacts and shows the people who use Telegram at the top of your Contacts list. When a friend is missing, or appears as a phone number instead of a name, the reading has gone wrong somewhere. Check three things in order: the phone's permission, Telegram's sync switch, and the number itself.

1. Permission and the sync switch

  • Phone permission: Telegram needs access to your contacts. On Android it is in the phone's app settings for Telegram, under Permissions; on iPhone, in the phone's Settings under Telegram.
  • Telegram's switch: Sync Contacts must be on. The app describes it as "Contacts from this device will be added to this account."

Not available on this device.

  1. Settings tab
  2. Privacy & Security
  3. Sync Contacts
  1. Bottom Settings tab
  2. Privacy and Security
  3. Sync Contacts

Computers do not read a phone's contacts; syncing happens in the phone app. On Android the switch is near the bottom of Privacy and Security, in the Contacts section.

Telegram for Android, Privacy and Security, Contacts section - Delete Synced Contacts, Sync Contacts switched on, Suggest Frequent Contacts
  1. Sync Contacts - must be on for friends from your phone to appear in Telegram

2. A friend shows as a number: Telegram's own fix

Telegram's FAQ gives these steps, in this order:

  1. Make sure the app is up to date.
  2. Close the app completely and open it again.
  3. In your phone's contacts, temporarily change that person's name, for example by adding a few characters, then change it back. This makes Telegram read the contact again.
  4. If nothing helps, log out and log back in.

3. The number and the other person

  • Save foreign numbers with the country code, starting with + . Without it, the number is read as a local one and does not match their account.
  • They may have changed number. If they moved Telegram to a new number, the old one in your phone no longer matches.
  • They may have left Telegram. A deleted account appears as "Deleted Account". See a contact showing as Deleted Account.

You do not need a phone contact to reach someone: ask for their username or their t.me link. See finding someone by username.

Next step: deleting uploaded contacts and stopping contact sync.

FAQ

Telegram's FAQ suggests updating, restarting, then temporarily changing the contact's name in your phone and changing it back.

Does Telegram Desktop sync my phone contacts?

No. Contact syncing happens in the phone app; the desktop app shows the contacts already on your account.
