reply Two things happen, and only one is obvious

The visible one is context. In a group where four conversations are running, "yes, that works" means nothing on its own and everything attached to the message it answers. The reply header is what turns a flat list of messages into something a person arriving later can follow.

The second is a notification. A reply reaches the person you replied to the way a mention does, which means it gets through in a group they have muted — and most large groups are muted by most of their members. Somebody who never sees the room will still see your answer.

That makes replying the polite way to reach one person in a busy room: no mention that reads as summoning them in public, no private message that moves the conversation somewhere else, and the context is already attached.

Which direction it goes is not universal, and on some platforms it can be changed — the swipe can be set to do something else entirely, which is worth knowing if yours appears to do nothing. It is a setting rather than a missing feature.

It works on anything in the chat: a photograph, a file, a voice message, a sticker. Replying to media is the cleanest way to comment on one picture out of twelve, and in a group it is the only way to make clear which one you mean.

And it can be abandoned. A reply header sitting above the composer can be dismissed before you send, which is the fix for the common accident of swiping the wrong message and typing a sentence attached to something unrelated.

groups What it does to a group

A group where people reply is a group that can be read later. Somebody scrolling back through two hundred messages can follow which answer belonged to which question, and the conversation survives as a record rather than as an impression of everyone talking at once.

A group where nobody replies produces the opposite: a stream of fragments that made sense in the moment and are almost unusable afterwards. That cost is invisible while you are there and obvious to the person who joined yesterday.

It is also worth knowing when not to. Replying to your own last message to add a thought is noise, and replying to something from three days ago in an active chat drops a stranger into an argument nobody remembers. In both cases a plain message, or a private one, is the better instrument.
