Press and hold a chat in your list and Telegram opens a floating preview of it. You can read what arrived, scroll a little, and let go — and the sender still sees it as unread.
Combined with the small image previews Telegram draws next to each chat, you can triage a full inbox without opening anything. The clip shows the gesture; below is what it does and does not hide.
What you will be able to do
- check_circle Read a message from the chat list without sending a read receipt.
- check_circle Tell photos apart in the list itself, instead of seeing the word "Photo".
- check_circle Mute, pin or archive a chat from inside the preview, without entering it.
- check_circle Know exactly when the preview stops protecting you.
Notice the finger never lifts. Releasing is what dismisses the preview; lifting and tapping is what opens the chat.
image Why the list shows pictures at all
A chat list that says "Photo" tells you nothing. Telegram instead draws a small preview of the image beside the snippet, so a receipt, a screenshot and a photo of your friend's dog are distinguishable before you open anything.
It can do this cheaply because a tiny blurred version of every image travels with the message itself — a handful of bytes, enough to render immediately. The full picture is fetched only when you actually look at it, which is why the list fills in instantly even on a slow connection.
Does the sender find out?
The preview is only useful if you trust it. Two gestures, and only one of them is silent.
visibility Press and hold, then release
open_in_new Letting go and tapping in
The rule that holds: reading text is free, playing or opening media is not.
touch_app The gesture, step by step
- Find the chat in your list The small image beside the snippet already tells you whether this is worth opening.
- Press and hold — do not tap A firm press on the row opens the floating preview. A tap opens the chat and sends the receipt.
- Read, still holding Scroll inside the preview with the same finger. The chat behind stays unread the whole time.
- Slide up for the quick actions, or release Sliding up reveals mute, pin, archive and mark as read. Releasing closes the preview and leaves everything as it was.
schedule When this is the right tool
The honest use is triage: you are somewhere you cannot reply properly, and you want to know whether a message needs you now or can wait an hour. The preview answers that without committing you to an immediate response.
The less honest use is reading without acknowledging, indefinitely. That works, but the person on the other side sees an unread message and draws their own conclusion — which is a social cost, not a technical one.
This page is the gesture. The curriculum step covers the read state properly: how receipts work in groups, what Mark as Unread actually changes, and where the preview fits in an inbox-zero routine.
