Telegram lets you set the size of message text independently of everything else on the phone. Larger for reading comfortably, smaller to fit more of a conversation on screen — and the menus stay where they were either way.

That separation is the part worth knowing. Most apps make you choose between readable messages and a phone where every label is suddenly enormous.

What you will be able to do

  • check_circle Change message text size without touching your phone's system setting.
  • check_circle Or follow the system setting deliberately, if that is what you want.
  • check_circle Pick a size for the actual reason you are changing it.
  • check_circle Fix the things people try to fix with text size and should not.

The preview above the slider is live, so the size is chosen by looking at a real message rather than at a number.

format_size A slider, not three presets

The control is continuous rather than small, medium and large. That sounds trivial and is not: the comfortable size for most people sits between two presets, and having to round up or down is how you end up with an interface that feels slightly wrong all day.

Changing it affects message text and the chat list. Buttons, tabs and settings screens keep their own size, so the app stays navigable at sizes that would otherwise break the layout.

On iOS there is an extra switch: follow the system font size, or do not. Turn it on if you have already set a size for the whole phone in the accessibility settings and want Telegram to match. Turn it off if you want large messages and compact menus, which is the arrangement most people actually want.

devices
It is per device, and rightly so The size you want on a phone held at arm's length is not the size you want on a desktop across the room. This setting does not sync, and that is the correct behaviour rather than an oversight.

What are you actually trying to fix

Four reasons people reach for this slider. Two of them have a better answer somewhere else.

format_size The text is simply too small

check_circle This is what the slider is for. Push it until a message is comfortable when the phone is where you normally hold it, not held close.
check_circle Go one step further than feels necessary, then use it for a day. Comfort is easy to under-estimate in a settings screen.

Worth separating: size is about your eyes, theme is about the light, structure is about finding things.

settings Where the setting is

  1. Android Settings, Chat Settings. The message text size slider is near the top, with a live sample above it.
  2. iOS and iPadOS Settings, Appearance. The same slider, plus the switch for following the system size.
  3. Desktop Settings, Chat Settings. Independent of the phone, as it should be.
  4. Move it while looking at the sample The preview is a real message bubble, so judge it there rather than by the number.
  5. Live with it for a day Then adjust once. The first choice is almost always too timid.

This page is one control on the appearance screen. The curriculum step covers the rest of it: themes and when they switch, how accent colours are applied, and the choices that make long reading comfortable rather than merely possible.

Summary

At a glance

  1. 1Text size

Change message text size in Telegram's own settings.

  2. 2Or follow the system
