Holding the send button offers to deliver a message without making a sound. It arrives immediately, appears normally, and simply does not ring.
It is a small feature with an outsized effect on how a group feels, because most of what interrupts people is not important — it is just loud.

A silent message is a normal message in every respect except the alert. It arrives at once, it is unread in the usual way, it shows a badge, and the recipient sees it the next time they look. What it does not do is make a noise or vibrate a phone in a pocket.
The decision it represents is worth stating plainly: you are saying this matters enough to send and not enough to interrupt. Most messages are that, and almost nobody sends them accordingly.
Which of your messages deserve a sound
Four situations. In three of them the silent option is the considerate choice and in one it is the wrong one.

A workable rule: one sound per point, silence for everything that elaborates it.

- Hold the send arrow Press and hold on a phone; right-click on desktop.
- Choose Send Without Sound It goes immediately.
