Telegram Video Messages Architecture: Round Video Notes, Telesco.pe Encoding & Hands-Free Lock
Conventional video recording in messaging apps is clunky: it demands opening a full-screen camera viewfinder, choosing between recording and photo modes, capturing video, reviewing, and manually hitting send. Telegram revolutionized quick visual communication with Round Video Messages. With a single tap on the microphone icon, the composer switches to camera mode. Users simply hold the button to record a video note in a streamlined 1:1 circular aspect ratio, or swipe up to lock hands-free recording. Chunks stream to Telegram's cloud cluster during recording, delivering near-instant playback upon finger release.

1. The Single-Tap Mic / Camera Toggle Mechanic
To keep the bottom message composer clutter-free, Telegram uses a single multi-functional action button at the bottom right:
State 0: Microphone (Voice Note) <--- Single Tap Event ---> State 1: Camera (Round Video Note)
When tapped, the icon flips smoothly between microphone and camera with a 150ms spring animation. The client preserves this state across chat switches and app relaunches, ensuring your preferred media medium is always ready.
2. Swipe-Up Hands-Free Recording Lock & Gestures
Holding your finger down for up to 60 seconds of video can cause thumb fatigue. Telegram introduced intuitive spatial gesture mechanics:
Dragging your thumb upwards toward the padlock indicator latches recording into hands-free mode. You can prop your phone on a desk and continue talking naturally.
Once locked, a camera flip icon appears. Tap it at any time to transition between the selfie lens and rear camera without pausing or splitting the clip.
If you make a mistake or misspeak, slide your thumb to the left. The recording is instantly aborted and wiped from temporary memory.
3. 1:1 Circular Shader & Streaming MP4 Pipeline
Telegram round video notes are technically sophisticated multimedia streams:
Instead of waiting until you finish speaking to compress and upload the video, Telegram streams encoded H.264/AAC chunks to the server in real time over MTProto. When you hit send, the video note appears on recipient screens within a fraction of a second.
4. Telesco.pe Public Cloud Video Hosting Engine
To make video notes universally shareable outside Telegram, the platform created Telesco.pe:
https://telesco.pe/channel_name/message_id
Any circular video published to a public channel is assigned a public Telesco.pe link. Anyone on Twitter, Reddit, or web forums can click the link and watch the round video note play in a web browser without needing a Telegram account.
