Do You Need a Crypto Wallet on Telegram?
Telegram has a cryptocurrency network closely tied to it, and plenty of games, bots and messages will suggest you set up a wallet. Many people do, simply because an app asked. Few stop to check whether anything they actually want to do needs one.
Most things people do on Telegram, including paying for content, subscriptions and gifts, need no crypto wallet at all. A wallet is for a short, specific list of activities, and it brings a responsibility that nothing else in the app does. This track explains how wallets work and where the risks are; it does not advise anyone to buy or hold anything. This first step is simply the question of whether you need one.

Notice what is not on the list: playing a game, using a mini app, joining a channel, or claiming a reward. None of those needs a wallet by nature. When one of them asks you to connect or create one, that request is the app's choice, and it deserves the questions in the last section of this page.

This is not about which is better. It is about which safety nets exist when something goes wrong.

A wallet is not a better way to pay for Telegram things. It is a separate tool for a few activities that cannot happen any other way, and it replaces the safety nets you are used to with your own care.

Finish this sentence: "I need a wallet so that I can…". If the answer is one of the "Yes" rows above, the rest of this track is written for you, starting with the choice between a wallet someone else holds and one you hold yourself.
If the answer is "because an app told me to", "because everyone in the group has one", or "in case it is useful later", you do not need one yet. Nothing is lost by waiting: a wallet can be created in minutes whenever a real reason appears.

The next decision is who holds the keys. With a custodial wallet, a company holds them for you: it can freeze or recover your balance, and you have someone to contact when something goes wrong. With a self-custody wallet, only you hold them: nobody can freeze it, and nobody can help you if you lose the recovery phrase. Step 002 is about that trade.

Wallet requests often arrive wrapped in urgency. Three patterns come up again and again, and each is a reason to stop rather than to continue.
A reward you can only claim by connecting a wallet. Genuine rewards inside Telegram usually arrive as Stars or gifts, which need no wallet. A "claim" that requires connecting one is the most common way people approve something they do not understand.
A helper who offers to set it up for you. Anyone who creates a wallet for you, or asks you to read out or type your recovery phrase so they can "help", has taken it. Nobody legitimate ever needs that phrase.
A deadline. "Connect in the next hour or lose your allocation." Real services do not work on the clock of a stranger's message.

Are Stars a cryptocurrency?
No. Stars are an in-app balance you buy with ordinary money and spend inside Telegram. They are not held in a crypto wallet and do not need one. The Telegram Stars track explains them in detail.
Does Telegram require a wallet to use any of its features?
Only the activities that genuinely involve crypto, such as trading collectibles on Fragment or receiving crypto. Messaging, channels, groups, bots, Premium and Stars all work without one.
A game says I must connect a wallet to continue. Should I?
Not before you know exactly what it will ask you to approve. Connecting shares your wallet address; approving a transaction can move what is in it. Later steps in this track cover reading those screens. If in doubt, stop playing; you lose a game, not your savings.
I created a wallet months ago and never used it. Is it a risk?
An empty wallet has nothing to steal. The risk is only what you put into it later, or a recovery phrase you stored carelessly and then reuse. If you never plan to use it, simply leave it empty.
