What TON Is and How It Connects to Telegram
TON, The Open Network, is a public blockchain: a shared record of who holds what, kept by many independent computers rather than by one company. Its coin is called Gram. Until a community vote renamed it, the same coin was called Toncoin, and you will still see that name in older guides and apps.
This step does not explain blockchains in general, and it says nothing about whether the coin is worth buying. It explains one thing: where TON touches Telegram, and what changes when something you own moves from your Telegram account onto the chain. That line, between the account and the chain, is the one every later step in this track depends on.

TON began as a Telegram project. The company designed the network and planned a coin called Gram, then stepped back after regulators in the United States objected to the way the coin was being sold. Development carried on as an open-source project run by an independent community, and the coin circulated under the name Toncoin.
Since then the two have moved closer again. Telegram has built TON into several of its features, and it now takes an active part in running the network. The coin's original name came back through a community vote: Toncoin became Gram, while the network kept the name TON.
For someone using Telegram, the practical picture is simpler than the history. TON is the one blockchain Telegram's own features are wired to. Gram is the coin that moves on it, and the thing that pays the network's small fees whenever anything on the chain changes hands.
The rename needed no action from anyone. Balances and wallet addresses stayed exactly as they were. There was no swap, no claim and no migration. A message asking you to "convert your Toncoin to Gram", connect a wallet to "upgrade" your coins, or send coins to receive new ones is a scam, however official it looks.
Where TON shows up inside Telegram
You can use most of Telegram without meeting any of these. Pick one to see what it involves.
Collectible usernames and anonymous numbers
Fragment, the marketplace for Telegram usernames and anonymous numbers, records each item on the TON blockchain as belonging to a wallet. That is why these names can be bought, sold and transferred between people, which an ordinary free username cannot.
It also means ownership follows the wallet, not your Telegram account. Whoever controls the wallet controls the name. The Fragment track explains what that does and does not give you.
A collectible name is held by a wallet. Lose the wallet and the name goes with it.
Ad revenue and money earned from Stars
Channel owners who share in advertising revenue, and creators who earn Stars, can take that income out through Fragment. The payout arrives on the TON blockchain, in Gram, at a wallet the creator controls.
This is the point where earnings stop being a number inside Telegram and become coins in a wallet. From then on the rules of the chain apply: transfers are final, and nobody at Telegram can reverse a payment sent to the wrong address.
Earnings move from your account to your wallet, and the chain's rules start there.
Collectible gifts that can leave Telegram
Some Telegram gifts can be upgraded into collectibles, and a collectible can be transferred out to the TON blockchain as a token held by a wallet. Until then, the gift lives in your Telegram profile like any other.
Moving a gift onto the chain changes who looks after it. Inside Telegram, your account protects it. On the chain, your wallet does, and so does whoever gets hold of that wallet's recovery phrase.
Keep a gift in Telegram unless you have a reason to hold it in a wallet.
Wallets, and mini apps that connect to them
Telegram's menu offers a wallet run by a separate company, and many standalone wallet apps also work with TON. Step 003 compared the two. Separately, mini apps can ask to connect to a TON wallet through a standard connection, TON Connect, usually to take a payment or check what you hold.
Connecting shares your wallet's address and lets the app ask you to approve transactions. It does not hand over your coins. Every transaction still needs your approval inside the wallet, and that approval screen is the one to read carefully.
A connection asks; only your approval in the wallet moves anything.

Everything above comes down to one distinction. Some things you own on Telegram are kept by Telegram, inside your account. Others are kept on the TON blockchain, by whoever controls a wallet. They look similar in the app, but they are protected, recovered and lost in completely different ways.

Transfers are final. A payment to the wrong address cannot be pulled back by anyone.

Moving anything from the left column to the right changes who can protect it. Do it on purpose, never because a message told you to.
The last line of the right column surprises people most. A wallet address is not a secret. Once someone knows yours, they can look up every transfer it has made, which is why sharing an address in a public group tells strangers more than it seems to. Step 005 covers reading addresses safely.
block What TON is not
- Not required for Telegram. Chats, groups, channels, calls and Stars all work without a wallet. Step 001 of this track asked whether you need one at all.
- Not Telegram Stars. Stars are a balance inside your Telegram account, bought through app stores or Telegram's own routes. Gram is a coin on a public chain. They meet only where creators convert earnings, or where Stars can be bought with coins.
- Not a guarantee of anything. A project using TON, or a mini app that connects to a TON wallet, has not been approved by Telegram because of it. The chain records transfers; it does not vouch for the people making them.
- Not advice. This track explains how holding and sending work. It does not tell you whether to buy, hold or sell any coin, and the price of Gram is outside its scope.

Is Toncoin the same as Gram?
Yes. Gram is the new name of the coin that was called Toncoin. The rename changed the name, ticker and logo, not the coin itself: balances and addresses stayed the same and nobody had to do anything. Older apps, articles and exchanges may still use the old name for a while.
Does Telegram own TON?
No single company owns a public blockchain in that sense. Telegram designed TON originally, stepped back, and has since built the network into its features and taken an active role in running it. The network itself is maintained by many independent participants.
Do I need Gram to use Fragment?
To buy a collectible username or an anonymous number, you pay in Gram from a wallet. Browsing does not need anything. Creators withdrawing income receive it in Gram. The Fragment track walks through each case.
Can Telegram reverse a TON transaction?
No. Once a transfer is recorded on the chain, it is final for everyone, including Telegram and the company behind your wallet. That is the main reason Step 008 insists on sending a small amount first.
Someone says my Toncoin will be lost unless I convert it. Is that true?
No. The rename needed no swap, claim or migration, and nothing was lost by doing nothing. Any message asking you to send coins, connect a wallet or enter a recovery phrase to "convert" them is an attempt to take them.
