A large group can hide its member list. Admins still see it; ordinary members see a count instead of a directory of everybody who belongs.

That list is the most valuable thing in a community to anybody collecting accounts to message, and hiding it is the single change that most reduces what a group costs its members.

What you will be able to do

  • check_circle Hide the member list in a group you run.
  • check_circle Say what it stops and what it does not.
  • check_circle Protect yourself as a member of groups you do not run.
  • check_circle Combine it with the settings that matter alongside.

A switch in the group's settings, available once a group is large enough for the list to be a liability.

group_off A list is a mailing list

An open member list is a ready-made set of accounts who share an interest, each one reachable. That is exactly what somebody sending unsolicited messages wants, and it is why members of large public groups receive messages from strangers shortly after joining.

Hiding it removes the directory. People can still see who wrote each message, so the conversation is unaffected, but nobody can enumerate the room.

It is not total. Anybody who posts is visible, an attentive observer can build a partial list over time, and admins remain listed. What it prevents is the cheap, automatic version — and cheapness is what makes that behaviour worth doing at scale.

shield
Protect yourself even where you are not the admin Your own privacy settings decide what a stranger who does find you can do: who may message you, who can see your number, and whether unknown chats are archived automatically. Those apply in every group, whatever its settings.

Four things a group owner should weigh

The last one is about what you lose.

report The obvious reason

check_circle Members stop receiving unsolicited messages shortly after joining, which is the commonest complaint in any public community.
check_circle It also stops rival communities harvesting your membership, which happens more than owners expect.
check_circle Costs nothing and changes nothing about the conversation itself.

In a large public group, hide it. In a small one where members are meant to meet, do not.

settings Setting it

  1. Open the group settings as an admin The members option is with the other visibility controls.
  2. Hide the member list Admins keep seeing it.
  3. Turn on join approval Which does more than any of this.
  4. Restrict links for ordinary members And enable anti-spam if the option is there.
  5. Say in the pinned message how people can find each other If that mattered.
  6. Check your own privacy settings They apply in groups you do not run.

This page hides one list. The curriculum step is the whole visibility question: what public and private change, how people join, what members can see about each other, and the structure that decides all of it.
