One message, not two
Text that travels with a photo is called a caption. If you send a photo and then type your explanation, you get two messages, and the second one can drift away from the first: someone forwards only the photo, or a busy group pushes the text out of sight. As a caption, the photo and its text are a single message. They are forwarded together, found together in search, and replied to together.
| Photo, then a text message | Photo with a caption | |
|---|---|---|
| Forwarding | Each one separately; easy to forward half | Always together |
| Searching your chats | Finds the text, not the photo it belonged to | Finds the message with its photo |
| Replies | Go to whichever of the two was tapped | Go to the one message |
| Length | A normal message, up to 4,096 characters | A shorter limit; see below |
Typed first? Your text becomes the caption
You do not have to plan the order. If you have already started typing and then decide to add a photo, attach it and your text moves into its caption field. You do not need to copy it, delete it or type it again.
On Android there is one surprise: as soon as the message field has text in it, the paperclip disappears from the message bar and the send button takes its place. The attachment menu has not gone; it has moved to the menu at the top right of the chat, as Attach....
- Attach... opens the gallery with your text kept
Pick the photo, and the text you typed is waiting in the caption field next to the send button.
- Your typed text, now the photo's caption
- Move the caption above or below the photo

- Add a caption...
Telegram introduced this for the iPhone app as instant media captions, and it works with drafts: you can start the text on your computer, pick the photo up on your phone, and send both as one message. How drafts sync across devices explains why the text is waiting for you there.
On a computer, choosing a photo with the paperclip, or dropping it into the chat, opens a send window with its own caption field at the bottom; type or paste the text there before you press Send. Anything already in the message field is moved into that caption for you.
- The text you had typed, already moved into the caption
Cancel puts the text back in the message field; nothing is lost either way.
Where the caption sits
By default the caption appears under the photo. The button beside the caption field moves it above, so the text is read first and the photo comes after it, which suits a question about a screenshot or the set-up of a joke. The same choice is in the send menu as Move Caption Up and Move Caption Down.
When you select several photos, the text becomes the caption of the whole album rather than of one picture. If each photo needs its own description, send them one at a time, or use reordering photos before sending to put the one that matters first. Captions can be formatted like normal messages; formatting text in captions covers bold, links and spoilers.
When the text is too long for a caption
Captions have a lower length limit than normal messages, which allow 4,096 characters. If your text goes over it, the Android app asks you to make the caption shorter or subscribe to Telegram Premium, which doubles the limit. Telegram Desktop does not ask: the caption box just stops accepting text, so a long paste is cut without a word, often mid-sentence.
- The caption simply stops - text past the limit was pasted but never entered
Pasted text here was about twice the limit. There was no warning; check the end of a long caption before you press Send.
Without Premium, you have three good options:
- Trim it. A caption that needs scrolling is usually two messages in disguise: what the photo is, and everything else.
- Send the photo with a short caption, then the rest as a reply to it. Press and hold the photo after sending and choose Reply. The reply stays visibly attached, even in a busy group.
- Send the text first and the photo as a reply. Better when the text is the main point and the photo is evidence, such as a long description with one screenshot.
Next step: auto-enhancing photos before you send them.
