Anonymous Telegram Numbers and Who They Are For
Fragment sells more than usernames. It also sells phone numbers starting with +888. They are often called anonymous numbers, and that name promises more than they deliver. A +888 number is a virtual number, recorded on the TON blockchain and held in a wallet, that works only for signing up to and logging in to Telegram.
Its one real difference from an ordinary number is where your login codes arrive. Instead of a text message from a phone carrier, the code appears on Fragment, for whoever holds the wallet. It takes the carrier out of your login, and puts your wallet in its place. This step explains what that changes, what it leaves exactly as it was, and the small group of people for whom that trade makes sense.

- A virtual number, sold as a collectible. Telegram released them as a limited run. Like a collectible username, it belongs to the wallet that holds it.
- No SIM card. You can create a new Telegram account with one, or switch an existing account to it from the mobile app's settings, if the number is not already connected to another account.
- Codes arrive on Fragment. When Telegram asks for a login code, you connect the wallet that holds the number to Fragment and read the code there.
- Telegram only. Fragment is clear that these numbers cannot make calls, receive text messages, or be used to sign up to other services unless those services choose to support them.
What an anonymous number changes, and what it does not

This is the one thing it really changes
With an ordinary number, anyone who gets the carrier to move your number to their SIM can receive your login codes. A +888 number has no carrier, so that route is closed. The same is true of a number being reassigned to a stranger after you stop paying for it.
Two-Step Verification already blocks most of this for ordinary numbers, as Step 003 of the Privacy & Security track explained. The +888 number removes the carrier from the picture entirely.
It takes the phone company out of your login. That is its real benefit.
Your identity is whatever your profile says
A +888 number does not hide your name, your photo, your username, the groups you are in or what you write. People recognise you by those, not by your number. And if you move an existing account to a +888 number, everyone who knew you before still knows you.
Hiding your number from others is a privacy setting that works with any number. You do not need to buy one to stop people seeing your number.
To other people, you look exactly the same.
Telegram still runs your account
The number changes how you log in, not who can see your account's activity. Telegram still delivers your messages, still sees the connections your app makes, and still stores your cloud chats. Buying a number on the blockchain also creates a public record of the wallet that paid for it.
Step 006 of the Privacy & Security track described the metadata every account produces. A +888 number does not reduce it.
It is not anonymity from Telegram, or from the blockchain.
The wallet becomes the key to your logins
Your login codes now come to whoever holds the wallet. If you lose the wallet and its recovery phrase, you lose the way to receive codes for your account. If someone else gets the wallet, they can receive them too. Fragment says your collectibles are safe if you lose your phone, as long as the wallet's word list is stored safely.
That makes two protections essential: Two-Step Verification with a recovery email on the Telegram account, and the wallet's recovery phrase stored on paper, as Step 007 of the Wallet track explains.

group Who it is for
For most people, an ordinary number with Two-Step Verification is the better choice. It costs nothing extra, it can be recovered through the carrier if something goes wrong, and it does not add a wallet to look after. A +888 number makes sense in a narrower set of cases:
- People for whom the carrier itself is a risk, because their phone records could be requested or their number moved by someone with influence over the provider.
- People who need an account not tied to a SIM, such as a separate account for a project that should not share a personal number.
- People who travel or change countries often and do not want their Telegram login to depend on keeping a particular SIM.
In each case, the person also has to be comfortable looking after a wallet carefully. Without that, the number trades one risk for a worse one.

The number is rarely what identifies you in a group. Your profile and what you write do. Hiding your number is a free privacy setting; a +888 number changes how you log in, not how people see you.
Your account uses a +888 number and you lose both your phone and the wallet's recovery phrase. What is the problem?
There is no carrier and no SIM to replace. The wallet is what receives the codes, and without its recovery phrase nobody can restore it. Keep the phrase safe and keep Two-Step Verification on.
A shop offers +888 numbers "that work for WhatsApp and banking too". What should you conclude?
Fragment states that collectible numbers cannot make calls, receive text messages or sign up to other services unless those services choose to support them. A seller promising otherwise is misleading you, and should not be trusted with anything else either.

Can I move my current account to a +888 number?
Yes. Fragment says any existing account can change its number, from the Settings of the Telegram mobile app, to a collectible number that is not already connected to another account. Your chats and contacts stay; only the login number changes.
Can I receive text messages or calls on it?
No. These numbers work only for signing up to and logging in to Telegram. They cannot make or receive regular calls or text messages.
Can I sell the number later?
Collectible numbers can be listed for auction or sale on Fragment, like usernames. Move your account to another number first: whoever holds the number next receives its login codes. Step 006 covers selling and transferring collectibles.
Is this investment advice?
