Linking a group to a channel puts a comments button under every post. Readers can discuss each one in its own thread, and the channel itself stays a clean list of posts.

The part that makes it work is that commenting does not require joining anything. The part that catches people out is that the comments live in a real group, with everything a group brings with it.

What you will be able to do

  • check_circle Link a discussion group so every post gets its own comment thread.
  • check_circle Understand where the comments actually live and who can see them.
  • check_circle Follow replies to your own comment without watching the thread.
  • check_circle Decide whether your channel wants this at all.

The comments button appears under the post once a group is linked — nothing else about the channel changes.

forum Two chats, joined at the post

A channel and a group are different kinds of object. Linking them tells Telegram to copy each new channel post into the group, and the replies to that copy become the comment thread shown under the original.

So comments are messages in the group, and everything true of a group is true of them: they are moderated with the group's tools, they are subject to its permissions and its slow mode, and the people writing them are members of that group's conversation whether or not they think of it that way.

Readers do not have to join to comment. Telegram routes replies to them through a service chat, so somebody can take part in a thread without adding another group to their list.

group
The group is a real group with a real name People can find it, open it, and read every comment on every post in one stream. That is often a surprise to a channel owner who thought of it as a comments feature rather than as a community they are now running.

Should your channel have comments

Four positions. Only one of them is "no", and it is a legitimate one.

forum Open comments

check_circle The right default for a channel about a subject people have opinions on. Threads per post keep discussions separate instead of one endless room.
check_circle It also gives you readers who would never write in a group, because commenting feels smaller than joining.
cancel It is moderation work from the first day. Comments arrive on old posts too, which is where unmoderated channels find spam weeks later.

The question is not whether people want to comment. It is whether somebody will read the comments.

settings Linking a group

  1. Open the channel's settings Tap the title, then the edit control, then Discussion.
  2. Create a new group or pick an existing one A new one made for the purpose is usually cleaner than repurposing a group people already use.
  3. Set its rules before announcing Slow mode, join permissions, admins. The linked group is where moderation happens.
  4. Post something and check the button The comments control appears under the post.
  5. As a reader Tap Comments, write, and replies reach you through the service chat without joining.
notifications_active
Replies find you Somebody answering your comment produces a notification in a dedicated replies chat, so you do not have to watch a thread on a post you read yesterday. It is one of the better-designed small things in the app.

This page is the link between the two chats. The curriculum step is running the result: moderating a comment stream at volume, what the group's settings do to the threads, and how a channel and its community stay distinguishable.
