Logging In to Telegram With an Anonymous Number
Step 007 explained what a +888 number is: a Telegram login number bought on Fragment, with no SIM card and no mobile carrier behind it. This step is about using one, and about what quietly changes when you do.
With an ordinary number, your login codes arrive by text message, and the carrier stands behind the number if you lose your phone. With an anonymous number, the codes arrive on Fragment, to whoever holds the number in their wallet. The number stops being something your carrier looks after and becomes something you keep. Everything below follows from that one sentence.

key Where the code comes from
Fragment describes the process plainly. You enter the +888 number in Telegram as you would any number. When Telegram asks for the login code, you connect the wallet that holds the number to Fragment, and the code is shown there, on Fragment's page for that number. No text message is sent, because there is no SIM to send it to.
Two things follow. First, you need the wallet, not a phone, to sign in on a new device. Second, anyone who holds the number in their wallet can see its codes. Those two facts shape every habit in the rest of this step.
Signing in with a +888 number
The code always comes from Fragment. What you do around it depends on where you are starting from.
Signing up with the number from the start
Open Telegram, choose to sign up, and enter the +888 number in the phone number field. When the app asks for the code, open Fragment in a browser, connect the wallet that holds the number as Step 002 showed, and read the code from the number's page. Type it into Telegram.
Before doing anything else in the new account, set up Two-Step Verification with a recovery email. It is the one thing standing between your account and anyone who later gets the number.
Sign up, then set the password before anything else.
Changing an existing account to the +888 number
Fragment says any existing account can switch, from the Settings of the Telegram mobile app, to a collectible number that is not already connected to another account. Find your phone number there, choose to change it, enter the +888 number, and read the confirmation code from Fragment.
Your chats, groups and contacts stay; only the login number changes. Your old SIM number is no longer attached to the account, so it stops being a way in, and also stops being a way back.
You gain independence from the carrier, and lose it as a fallback.
Adding a laptop or a new phone months later
This is where people get caught out. A new sign-in needs a code, and the code needs the wallet. If the wallet lives on the phone you just lost, you are stuck.
The easier route is a device that is already signed in. Telegram Desktop and the web client can be linked by scanning a QR code with a signed-in phone, from Settings > Devices, without a new code; you will still be asked for your Two-Step Verification password. Keeping two signed-in devices means you rarely need the wallet at all.
Keep at least two devices signed in, so the wallet is a backup, not the only door.

With a SIM number, losing your phone was a trip to the carrier. With an anonymous number, it depends on the pieces below. Losing any one of them is survivable if the others are in place.

The recovery phrase is the piece people treat most carelessly and can least afford to. Store it the way Wallet Step 007 describes: on paper, offline, never in a photo, a cloud note or a chat. A Telegram Security Baseline in Fifteen Minutes covers the password and recovery email.
devices Do not keep every piece on one phone
The most common setup is also the most fragile: the wallet app, Telegram and the only signed-in session, all on the same phone. It works perfectly until that phone is lost, stolen or reset, and then every piece in the table above disappears at once. The wallet has to be restored from the phrase before any new device can get a code, and if the phrase was a screenshot on that phone, there is nothing to restore from.
Spreading the pieces out costs very little. Keep Telegram signed in on a second device, such as a laptop. Keep the recovery phrase on paper, somewhere other than where you carry the phone. If you use a separate wallet just for the number, that is fine too; what matters is that no single loss takes the wallet, the phrase and every session together.
warning The mistake that hands over your account
Because codes go to whoever holds the number, selling or transferring a number that is still the login for your account gives the buyer the ability to receive login codes for it. If your account has no Two-Step Verification, that is enough for them to sign in.
So the order matters. If you ever plan to sell or give away a +888 number, first change your account to a different number, check that you can sign in with the new one, and only then list or transfer the old one. The same applies in reverse when you buy: a number that was someone else's login may still be attached to their account, and Fragment only lets you switch to one that is not.

Codes come from fragment.com and nowhere else, and you open it yourself. A site that asks you to connect or approve something in your wallet can take the number, and anything else the wallet holds. Nobody legitimate asks for your recovery phrase.

Do I need the wallet every time I open Telegram?
No. Devices that are already signed in stay signed in. The wallet matters only when a new sign-in needs a code: a new device, or signing in again after being signed out.
Can I use the +888 number for anything outside Telegram?
Fragment says these numbers work only on Telegram. You cannot call or text with them, or use them to sign up for other services, unless a service chooses to support them.
What if I lose the wallet?
With the recovery phrase, you restore the wallet on another device and carry on. Without it, you lose the number, and new sign-ins depend on devices that are still signed in. Step 009 walks through that situation in detail, and why the password and recovery email matter most there.
Does using the number make my account harder to hack?
It removes one route: someone persuading your carrier to move your number to their SIM. It adds another: anyone who gets your wallet. Two-Step Verification protects you in both cases, which is why it is not optional with an anonymous number.
